In China, emphasis is placed on test scores and academics rather than extracurricular activities. There is almost no interscholastic sports competition between local schools and very few organized teams and activities. Despite this, our students and teachers have been successful in building a Canadian-style school with an active extracurricular life. We have many student-led clubs and activities including a Student Council, organized basketball, soccer, cooking and home economics, badminton teams, a long distance bike club, an art club, music club, movie club, student newspaper, a drama and cosplay club, just to name a few. Our boys and girls sports teams compete on a regular basis with local international schools.
Additionally, as part of their graduation transitions and planning courses, our students have created a volunteer club which works to help better their community. Our students have contributed their time and effort to help schools for migrant laborers, orphans, and the blind. During Christmas 2006, two GCA Grade 11 students worked with the local government to raise over 12000RMB to send 30 orphans to primary school. In 2007, our Planning and Transitions students visit local schools for the children of migrant laborers to teach English and visit with the children.
Copies of our latest newsletters have much more information about some of the extracurricular activities at GCA.
